I did one big butterfly on my dogs back with blopens last summer. I am far from pro when it comes to coloring so if I can do it anyone can,LOL

megan--I found them at Wal Mart just the other day. If not there, then I am sure that a craft store such as Pat Catans or Jo Ann Fabrics would have them. Or one of the big office stores such as Office Max. Barring all that--buy them on Amazon!
A good friend will come bail you out of jail. A GREAT friend will be there sitting beside you saying "Man, that was fun!"

This is my first attemp at blow pens. My friend came over and we worked on him together. We dyed his ears, head and tail with manic panic, but when I went to put the horseshoes on the blues didn't match so I went over everything with the blowpens. It's a really bad groom b/c he's an outside dog and was in a horrible mess when we started. Wow these pics are really bad quality when you shrink them down so much.colts dog

Hi megan-
I'm in Columbus, I've had had no luck finding them at Wal-Mart or Joannes, but Michaels usually has them. I got some right before Christmas, and I noticed they still had them when I was there looking for stuff to put on my green hat for APF.
Watch for ads from them too, every few weeks they have a coupon for 40% off a single item.
If you still can't find them, let me know and I will pick some up for you and send them to you. :-)

bummer, isn't it?
so here's the store list that i've visited...
walmart, target, pat catan's, office max, toys r us, and joanns fabrics.
office max USED TO carry them, and no longer does. the people at pat catans were very rude and had never heard of them. and joanns had blo pen stencils, but NO blo pens.
so brahmadog, i need your help! would you like me to send you a check for your troubles?

I went to Walgreen's yesterday and in the aisle where they have the "Seen on TV" things they had a big box of blo-pens, a whole crap load. And don't ask me how much is a crap load because I don't know, but there were a lot of different colors. I didn't buy them because I didn't have my business check book with me, and besides I really don't have a dog to blo on but I will still probably get them next time I go.

Usually I try to take it one day at a time, but lately several have attacked me at once...

Don't use the blo-pens as markers, it ruins the tips. Instead you can just use regular watercolor markers. Roseart makes them and they are very easy to find. Save the blo-pens for their intended use...dogs. or cats or rabbits hehehe

I did some clovers on a friends pitbull with blow pens. They turned out really nice. The only problem I had is that they never dried. Even after blowdrying them and hours after they were on they were smudging. She said the next day the color was still coming off. How do you all get them to dry completely before the dog goes home?
Anyway here is how they turned out before she left. I just wish they would stay that way...

sweets, it could be the dog itself. I haven't managed to find blopens over here yet, so can't say about them for sure, but i know with any other pen I've used on my smooth foxy X her coat just doesn't hold anything! It's like trying to write on a high gloss surface, it'll go on fine, but smudge and smear easily.

I did a shamrock on my Great Dane, and had the same problem, sweetz. I think the texture of their coarse hair doesn't absorb the ink as well, perhaps? He now has a green smudge on his chest. (I haven't gotten 'round to washing it off yet.)

if we are using a template when using blo pens we hold the template over the blo penned area and use either a hand held dryer or our normal standing dryer turned down low (if you are going to do this dont let the template slip or the colour will run if its not dry!) hope this helpssome hearts we did on a westie using the drying method

Nancy, how long do you usually blow dry the spots? It didn't seem to help me although I did not keep the stencil on cause the dogs move so much. Those hearts look good. How long did it take for them to dry?

Didn't you have a jack russel or a short haired dog with a butterfly? That looked really nice. Was that blo pens and did you dry that the same way? Has anyone found anything better for those short coated dogs without smearing? I noticed wattadog has short coated dogs with really nice designs. I'm am not having the same luck.

If its not drying, you may be applying to much ink.. try just applying the minumum needed to get the colour you want and then Blot, take a couple paper towels and press against the tatoo, then lift, repeat a few times (dont rub.. makes for ugly tatoo :p )

Well, darn Megan! I asked Matt if they needed a signature, and he said no, I wonder why they didn't just leave them?
In our Walgreens ad they had Blo Pens advertised, and the package they had pictured had different colors from the ones I got at Michaels. I'm going to check Walgreens later for myself. :-)

brahmadog,
on the little ticket they left they had marked the box which said an "adult" signature was require. someone 21 or older.
which confuses me...
seeing as how the package is addressed to me...will i be able to sign for it? i'm only 20! lol...
aahhh when will those guys be here. i've been waiting all morning!

but yes, i believe they are going to require a signature from what they marked. i hope they let ME sign for it! lol

I'm so sorry megan. I don't know what's going on. I don't understand why they need a signature, either. UPS dropped my Spa line stuff that I ordered at APF on my porch today with no signature needed.
I swear Matt sent them out on Friday. :-(

Princess- he sent yours out yesterday, let me know if you get them today!

I love doing this to Goldendoodles. And the best part he had a bright green spike collar which was AWESOME with the Blue!

I really need to get some hair glue or top knot gel or something though. the ones that get mohawks hate hairspray....

brahmadog,
after more than a week, they still haven't returned. i will try to call them tomorrow. i work on this lovely easter. (sarcastic "yay)
so i will give it a try tomorrow. if i have no luck, you may need to call as well. they didn't put a package number or anything on my ticket. they didn't fill it out properly, so i'll do my best. i've been hearing from more and more people how awful ups has been doing. especially with the "bunny buddy" thing. so we'll see what happens. i'll let you know.
did you ever get a tracking number for it? i hope so...

What an awesome job!! You must be permanently out of breath. This is terrific, and I am jealous of your artistic skills. I like the tassled ears. I've always liked that style, and it sure works for your coloring. You make us all proud!

Just wondering if anyone has tried using a regular airbrush? Wondering if watercolors diluted with water and used with an airbrush would work or even easter egg dye diluted with water and vinegar like usual? Just a thought cuz my jaw hurts using those blopens! LOL

THANKS bbird!! :-) I order the BOLD color blo pens online from Mr. Art. The color is definitely brighter. I use the regular colors too, but like the intense color of the BOLD. I blow on the color and comb immediately... it really helps distribute & enrich the color. I have found all the blowing can give me a headache, so before I start I take a couple Advil. lol Thanks so much for all your compliments. This is such a fun part of grooming, and I must say a BIG thanks to pixiedust... and to all those Creative Grooming Contestants that give us a place to aspire to!

brahmadog,
please email me concerning the ups package. i called ups and there has been a "situation". i'll explain when i hear from you. basically, you have to call to start a "tracer" at which point they are going to have to open an investigation, etc etc etc. i'll explain in further detail. please email. thanks!

When UPS opens an "investigation" it basically means there is no hope of ever finding your package. Or it will be returned to you three months later looking like it went through Afghanistan.

I have a lot of experience with "Tracers" at my old job.

I'm planning on using blow pens on my cat. Anyone know if it's safe for a cat to ingest in case he tries to clean it off himself? I know they are "non-toxic" but I just want to double check.

I used blow pens on my cat the other day... totally pointless..lol... within an hour she had all the parts she could reach licked clean. She obviously didnt like her new colouring. she has suffered no illness from cleaning it off herself, and i have been keeping a close eye on her just incase.

Does anyone have an idea on how to get blow pen out of my B.C's coat? I have used everything but bleach on him. Been working on him for 3 weeks now and I can't get the lime green out. Any help? We have a show next weekend. He is listed as a tri, but I don't think that means green

I bathed Snowy today. The yellow didn't come out, and there's still a pink tinge to her head and tail, but all the other colors washed out. So maybe we'll just add some more pink and she'll be cotton candy for awhile. :-)

Hi plush... I have a whole carry-container full of blo pens. I've been 'collecting' them ever since I got Dawn's coloring CD's a couple years ago. LOL I usually empty at least a couple of pens when I'm coloring Snowy-- I like alot of hair so I can do some sculpting. I've used other coloring products, but really like the versatility of the blo-pens best.

Catclaws that is awesome! I had new poodle customers today that I think will be willing to let me try color. One is cream with a yucky coat and a dark red with an awesome coat but probably way too dark to take color. Not interested in bleaching first.
hahaha groomertrue, been there before. I did choose him tho.

This was really very easy. Andy was a mess but instead of stripping him with a 7, I swirled a 7 thru the mess all over. Used a comb for the rest and he is still not finished. The groom is horrible up close. I will bathe and finish and redo his do next week, I guess. The clinic was closing but I couldn't wait to color him. My mom had a sweater like that! Thanks!

If you saw this shave down close up you will think I am the worst groomer in the world!!!!!! Too much rush to get it off before we clossed. Before clipping i used a 7 and swirled it around where I wanted the vines then used a comb on the rest. I went over the vine areas with a 15. Cllinic closed so I took him home and colored. I'll do it better next time, if I ever have time again. Well, I'm trying and now i can't upload.

Catclaws that looks very cool. I'm sure that it'll look awesome once you get to touch it up. How many times have you colored before? I'm pretty new to color myself and the whole creative groom scene so I'm trying to catch up.:-)

We are attempting our first creative groom competition in August. So far it's been fun, but I'm nervous. We've been experimenting with different types of color. So far we've used blo pens, chalk and this weekend food coloring. Problem is with our team it's blind leading the blind.

Pixidust-I hear that you have instructionals for coloring. I've also heard that you have seminars, but we haven't been to a show in quite a while. We need some help with pretty much everything.

Okay, I need some help. I have colored my Bichon pink, but I want to put a Breast Cancer Awareness style ribbon on her side. I have the blo pens from Michaels. I have a template of sorts that is a magnet sticker. Now what?

Should I just hold up the ribbon magnet to the coat and try to scissor around it, or should I make a paper stencil and use the pen straight onto the coat? Do I draw the line onto the hair and then blow to fill it in, or blow the outline?

I am going to do this tomorrow, when I have someone available to hold the squirmy dog. I am so nervous about screwing up.

When I do a pattern on Snowy's coat, I 'draw' an outline with a comb, then set the bottom blade of my shears on the skin and start cutting the pattern, a little bit at a time. After I have the basic outline, I then start combing the coat inside of the pattern to the outside of the pattern line and follow the outline and trim the edges to bring out the pattern. After the pattern is cut in, I blow the color into the coat. This creates a sharper pattern and eliminates a blurred line. Don't know if you were planning to cut in a pattern, but it really does create a sharper pattern. :-)

Thanks bunches. I am a little challenged in the drawing dept. and this is why I am scared. I was wanting to cut it in. You can't get much more simple than a breast cancer awareness ribbon shape. But I would be the one to make it unidentifyable.

Good, you've got me started. I have just figured that I CAN freestyle a simple ribbon with the end of my poodle comb in the fur. I may have to scissor some overall length off first, as I have more than an inch of depth. Or, I may practice just cutting into the full length of coat first, so if I mess up, I can cut it off.

There's a costume party at our nearby PetSmart tonight and I am taking both my bichons, colored. What has become clear, is that I should have been practicing this pattern cutting and blo pen technique months ago. Maybe I'll have it down for next year.

Thanks again, groompoodles, you are my blo pen hero!

LOL You're welcome bbird! Believe me, you'll do just fine. I'm glad you were able to understand what I meant by 'drawing' the pattern on the coat with a comb. Snowy usually has at least 2" of coat when I do patterns on her, so you won't need to cut any coat. My very first experience cutting in a pattern was in CO ... one side I did the Petco logo (I worked there at the time) and on the other I did the Colorado Rockies logo, since it was Pet night at the Rockies game. It didn't turn out too bad, and everyone recognized the logos, so I called it a success! LOL Just take your time and breathe! Oh, and you have to blow too! HAHAHA

I failed miserably! The cut out didn't cut out well, the coat is so soft and dense. You can cut a line to the skin and not see it. I tried using the ribbon magnet as a guide, and freehand. When I finally got something of a thin lineed "ribbon" visable, the whole area is also chopped out of the coat. It's rather horrible. Then the blo pen failed. Brand new, only tested once at home and then..nothing. I could have screamed.

This is very humbling. It's pitiful. I hate to fail!

umm more like a dozen?

What about using hairspray to stiffen up the coat?
and cut a stencil out of paper, Magnets probably to heavy to hold against the coat...

I have a husky/shepherd mix, and his hair is more shepherd like, but all white. In order to put a design on him, I have the shave the area down, and then I tape a stencil to him. It might be easier if he was more well behaved, but did I mention he's a husky? lol

Anyway, last year I stenciled a pumpkin on him for Halloween, and the year before I had light blue snowflakes going down his legs, but I didn't shave that, and they ended up looking like light blue blobs after a few days. :-(
