I had a lady bring in 4 poodles from a rescue she did. They were very dirty, from being kenneled, I believe. I thought I could clean them up pretty nice till I started clipping. They had tiny brown things, at first resembling fleas, but they were almost under the skin. some I could pinch out or take my nail and they would come out. They were not moving. I clipped them down and used a flea shampoo on them. then i got to the last one and she had what seemed to be a bad case of dandrif. Would this be LICE? and would the flea shampoo be enough to kill it off? I had her get some shampoo for lice and it was a flea shampoo that said it was for Lice. She also got some of the powder. She does have several other dogs of her own who had been in with these dogs. Also what would be the best way to be sure it doesn't spread thru the shop? Luckily I didn't have any other dogs in. Thanks for your help.

Ok, you just gave me the eebie jeebies. I had a dog in a couple of weeks ago that was a springer that was full of burrs for a strip down. When all the hair was off I noticed these little brown things that seemed to be still stuck to the skin & I assumed they part of the burrs! Now you're making me wonder if they were lice! Does anyone have a picture of what lice look like? I guess I've never seen one & wouldn't know what to look for. |

That sounds like ticks. Some are quite small. |

I had a dog full of lice in my shop. It was like sand and no, flea shampoo will not kill it. If I knew then, what I know now, that dog would not have entered my shop. It was horrible and I had to do major, major cleaning of my shop and myself. I actually took the dog to a vet. |

I had a lady call me once to ask if I would do her dog with the lice Shampoo. I said no that I wouldn't take a lice covered dog in my home. She kept arguing with me that the vet said that it was safe & other dogs wouldn't catch it... yeah right, I groom in my home & dogs must walk through a carpeted area before getting to my grooming room, lice live for 72 hours in carpet. No thanks |

In my dog's case (above) I KNOW they weren't ticks. I still think they were the barbs from some burrs. Slicker brush, bathing, combing, nothing would take them all out unless you picked at every one. I just wondered as I wouldn't know lice if I saw it. Crossing my fingers I never do, either! |

If it helps any, the only (few) lice I've ever seen were pale colored, not brown. |

The ones I had in my shop were brown. Small, looked like tiny seeds. Weren't moving, seemed stuck to the hair. I didn't know what they were until I got the dog out in the sunlight and took one off and pinched it between my thumbnails. It popped, -gack- . So,...sent dog off to vet with owner, did marathon cleaning, and prayed to God I'll never see another one!!! |

The dog I groomed had brown lice. Vet called it cattle lice. They didn't move either. Reminded me of sand. This dog was covered big time. It was horrible!! |

Lice are HOST specific. Dogs get dog lice, cats get cat lice, people get people lice, cattle get cattle lice! Here's what dog lice look like:

Thanks, Mac! Never knew what the little buggers looked like. Whew! Definitley wasn't lice in this springer's case. Now I'm wondering what foxtail looks like. That's a burr, isn't it? |

Doggygirl, I believe you. The lice the dogs get here look more like the cattle lice. A kind of greenish-gray. Underdog, here's what those nasty foxtails look like. These are "pieces" that cause problems in dogs. |

Thanks, Underdog. It's a gift! lol I just love being able to find things for other people. I should have been a research librarian, I guess. Doggygirl, not to worry. I'm not overly sensitive, and I didn't take it "like that." Nor will you get any arguement from me that all lice are plain nasty! |

Mac, You are CORRECT! Lice are host specific,...ususally. The vet said the old dog that came in with the brown lice, YES! Doggygirl, they looked like sand, had cattle lice and it was unusual. As I said, the client has 3 other dogs and none of them were infested. Vet said the dogs age and health could have predisposed her, I personally think she is in the habit of rolling where the cattle and goats lay and shed hair. She rolls often and long here even now that she has no more parasites. And lice ARE just plain nasty, not always a case of poor hygiene, but certainly that has an effect. We are all subject to get any kind of nasty crawlie or stickie in our shops, we should be very cautious in commenting about any other groomshops' record. There are dirty shops and clients will see that at once, but a clean shop can indeed host just that "one that got away" and we should respond with positive solutions and never accusations or complaints. |
