The owner of this young golden wasnt home today when I groomed her, but I will call her this evening. She has MAJOR hair loss with dry, scaly, dark colored "sore" patches on her rump and tail. Is it SA? Or anyone have any recommendations? I assume she took her to the vet...hoping, anyway!!

nope, not that. She'd have to be Houdini to reach some of the affected parts. She also has hair coming out on her side and other areas, too. |

SA being seasonal alopecia, sebaceous adonitis(?) or something else? Hard to tell much from the pics. But what I have seen of alopecia doesn't present like what you describe, especially the coat discoloration shouldn't be there. Sebaceous Adonitis, I don't know about except that it can be a problem in poodles... |

Sebaceous Adonitis is what I was thinking. Guess I'll have to do some heavy duty reading about it online and see if I can come up with something. Hopefully she has had her to the vet already..then we'll know for sure. Can't imagine she wouldn't have. |

Sebaceous adenitis Sebaceous glands are destroyed, cause unknown; certain breeds more susceptible Short-haired breeds: circular areas of hair loss with fine scale; long-haired breeds: more widespread hair loss and scale, hair mats easily; may see itching in all breeds Clinical signs, breed, skin biopsy Antiseborrheic shampoos, fatty acid supplements; in more severe cases, steroids, retinoids Just copied above from Dr Foster&Smith website. The discoloration isn't mentioned....but who knows. Hope you figure it out. |

Does not look like SA (haven't ever known of a Golden to have SA in any case) but there is some serious and diffuse alopecia going on with that dog. First thing I'd want is a thyroid profile. |

I was just going to say thyroid profile. Goldens are in the more affected breeds with thyroid issues, and i know in my breed, we have a good share of it. Hair is often very dry, skin dry, pigment turns dark, hairloss usually starts around tail, hips, bum...Thinning of the coat is also a sign of low thyroid...that would be my first course of action... Now i will say that one of my golden clients came over, and i thought for sure her dog had low thyroid, told her to take it in to be tested. It turned out to be some mange. The vet said he could see why i thought it was thyroid, as all the signs were there coat wise, but some drops on his shoulders and he is now as good as new. Just a thought. |

Just have to update on this thread. I talked to the owner of the dog and asked what was going on with it. I asked her if she had it to the vet and what they said...she told me she was running and slid on the cement driveway!!! Guess that answers my question on whether she's going to see the vet, or not. I told her it didn't look like it to me and she just brushed it off. Poor dog!!! |

Sadly that is a typical response. I give out so much advice on diet and nutrition and brushing and sometimes I think no one is listening. I have a Cairn client that had bad skin for 3 years and I kept telling her to try this, try that and she was going to the vet with no real results. Well she came in and said the dog was all better, thanks to the vet. He put the dog on steroids. Now that wasn't rocket science! They still don't know why the dog had bad skin or what it was! I find people are generally lazy with this kind of thing and it annoys me also. Y'know the ones that have dogs with chronic ear problems and do not seem to want to get to the root of the problem. I feel badly for these dogs. |

OMG why do they ask us and then do nothing. I have a client whose dog has had an ear infection ever since I've known them, roughly 5 years! Makes me crazy. And nutrition, forget about it, just tear open a bag and nevermind your dog has been scratching for 3 years! |

I know how you feel westiemom & doggigirl! I LOST a customer because she was sick of me bugging her about the fleas on her dog! She brought Peaches in every 4 weeks. I would treat her for the fleas and remind her to use a monthly flea treatment. Every month she came in with 10-20 fleas. Was I supposed to ignore it? She told me she had no complaints about my grooming- it was just I did not mind my own business!! Sometimes you just can't win! |

oh, guess fleas aren't your business. If they're biting the dog, hopefully, they're biting her too. |
