Hi, I've just discovered and joined this forum. Lots of wonderful info here! I've read the threads about clipper advice, but still need help. I have 4 dogs, 3 of which need regular grooming. A Yorkie Poo, a Yorkie and a Toy Poodle. I have an older Wahl home pet set of clippers. I've never had success with it....I've come close to slinging it through a wall ( not really, but to help you understand my frustration ). So I need something to groom 3 dogs, app. every 2 months, one of which has silky hair that I usually scissor cut to about an inch ( but would like to use clippers ), a 12 year old toy poodle that is loosing hair on some parts of her body but has incredibly thick hair on other parts, and my yorkie poo that has thick wavy hair, which I usually scissor, too, but would like to switch over to clippers on him as well. So I definitely don't need a #40 blade. Should I get another home type kit (are there any good ones?), or get a more pro model? I would really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks for reading, and for your help! Debi |

Welcome to the GL. Definitely get yourself a professional set of clippers. Andis has a nice basic model that should work for you. http://grooming.petedge.com/Andis-AG-Single-Speed-Clipper-AD21730.pro I also recommend a 10 blade, a 30 blade and Wahl Stainless Steel Combs http://grooming.petedge.com/Wahl-Stainless-Steel-Attachment-Guide-Combs-Set-WA33900.pro Barb |

I second Barb's advice. The "Pet Grooming Kits" are just a waste of mony IMO. Sure, they may work great for a few times or so, but just don't seem to have the power of the professional models. Going with a professional clipper, you will end up paying more at the outset but the trade off is that a Professional set will last you a LONG LONG time and give you little frustration. I would recommend the Andis AGC 2-speed or super 2-speed or the Andis Ultra Edge for a home groomer. They are relatively light, feel good in your hand and have very little maintenance to worry about. All you have to do is change the blade drive once in a while which is SUPER easy to do. You will pay about $110-$140 depending on the model you choose and if you choose one that does or does not include the #10 blade. I also agree with Barb that you should go with the Wahl SS combs. These will give you a GREAT plush looking finish when used over the #30 blade and have NO chance of 'popping off' the blade in use like the plastic combs can sometimes do. Great for a beginner/home groomer. Good luck with your grooming, your pet's are precious! A good friend will come bail you out of jail. A GREAT friend will be there sitting beside you saying "Man, that was fun!"

Since they won't get heavy duty use, you should be fine with a single speed professional clipper. If you have any plans to groom super thick coated dogs (huskies, etc), I'd definitely go for the multiple speed clippers. Just keep in mind that the blades will get hotter faster with the 2 & Super 2 speed models. Also, I'd suggest at least two of each blade just in case. A piece of frozen marble or granite will cool the blades quickly, if by chance you get them too hot (when not under a comb attachment). If you keep the blades clean and well lubricated, and use them only on clean hair, they should stay sharp for years (grooming your three small dogs). Brandi
