I've heard food coloring but how would I get that much. I actually tried to mix up some blue last week and it just washed out. I suppose it would have to be full strength? |

Not sure what kind/brand of food colouring you are using - the brand I use is very concentrated and comes in tiny dropper bottles. More than enough to do many dogs. It only takes a few drops in a little water to get a good colour. I add however much I want to a few cups of water in a bowl and then sponge on. If it doesnt look dark enough on my 'test' patch I will add a bit more till I get the desired result. The colour holds pretty well for me - lasts a few weeks and doesnt rub off on the furniture. When you say it washed out, do you mean when you bath the dog? Yes, the colour does come out when you do this as it is not permanent. Tracy in Australia |

To use food coloring you get the good kind ( paste)from where the bakers get their supplies and add 1/3 cup of vinegar to a gallon of water/color mixed |

Groom56, I live in England and creative groooming is very limited and relatively unknown(and a much guarded secret!!)}}. We can get a few products designed for dyeing a dogs coat, but they are mixed with a dematting conditioner and are applied and left to rest on the coat for ten minutes or so (depending on the deepness of colour required) before rinsing (this makes them semi-permanent). Do I guess right that your version is applied (carefully) AFTER the dogs bath and condition, and then dried without it being rinsed off? Can you smell traces of the vinegar at all? How many baths does it take to remove the colour? I would love to get into this field of grooming and would welcome any advice at all. cfincken@ntlworld.com |

Dog is washed and RINSED not conditioned... then dried and brushed... then the color is applied and allowed to set 30-45 min then RINSED RINSED. the vinegar does not leave a smell... the color gets lighter and grows out in 3-6 months Grooming work is HARD work... most people think you get to "play" with the dogs all day. But it is a VERY rewarding job... the dog loves you and the people are nice |

Thanks groom56, Yes, I agree wholeheartedly with you, we would love to, but we don't get time to "play" with the dogs, grooming IS hard work, but the satisfaction gained outweighs the hard work! I've been grooming for 23 years now (since I was 11 years of age) and feel just as enthusiastic now as I did when I was 11. I have met so many wonderful dogs and people over the years (and some not so wonderful), and as you said, it is a VERY rewarding job (even if it is still a little underestimated/undervalued and underpaid!!! |

Hi Wattadog I've used the Dezynadog colours, but as they are used during the conditioning stage, they are no good for detail. I've seen other groomers work on the TV, and one groomer had a white standard poodle with a large shamrock in vivid green cut into and coloured across the back...with no bleeding into the white!!...so there must be a more controlled way to do it. I've been grooming part time for the last 10 years and I am now going back into grooming full time(shop opens October) and would love to offer this side of fun grooming to my customers, but I would like better control of the dye or a less permanent solution. |

ALSO IF ANY ONE WOULD GIVE THE STEPS OF CHALKING I WOULD APPRECIATE IT AND HOW LONG DOES THIS LAST? OR E-MAIL TO RAEGUSTUS1@AOL.COM |

The chalk gets put in water and let it soak for a few minutes then rub on the are you want to colour and brush through, seems to work better if you give a light mist to the coat so its not bone dry.. I dont find the Chalk last more than a few days though.. PixieDust has better instructions on it somewhere on this board. The Crazy Colours is a semi Perm Dye from the hairdressers, last about 4 weeks on my hair before its totaly gone, , I think about the same on the dogs I do, maybe a lil less, I apply it where I want (after the bath) let sit 10-15 minutes, swear under my breathe when the dog moves and smears it.. and then rinse out really well, Dry & finnish clip/style |

wattadawg, thanks for the advice...I am going to do some practicing and see what happens, maybe I will be able to post some pictures when I find a guinea pig, although I don't think they will look as good as yours. Can you dye a dog who is not naturally white, my mom has an apricot poodle. thanks (groomer formerly known as NICOLE1673) I have been asked to pick a name and stick to it so I have chosen...LilWelshWindiesMom |

Sure you can, but the darker the dog the less its going to stand out, I do an apricot poodle thats going to get decorated for Christmas, we did a test run and the darker colours (red, dark green) seem to show up ok. I dont think id bother if the dog was much darker than that, maybe get spray in hair colour (the wash out stuff) if the dogs darker |

thanks again, I really appreciate the help. I have to tell you that today, I had a customer bring in two poodle pups and asked if I would keep them until the first part of January, she was going out of town for the holidays, of course they are both light colored and all I could see were images of colored poodles dancing in my head, then she said if you can sell them for me I would appreciate it. I asked my hubby if I could buy them to practice on and he said, ABSOLUTELY NOT! He just doesn't understand. I really want and need some guinea pigs. My mom said I could dye hers but it better not look stupid and it better come out. So, tomorrow I may do my first experiment. |

I'm trying to post pics, but not having much success. I have a bichon frise that I used blo-pens & stencils on - it's easier IMHO than the food colors or koolaid. Esp with greens & reds (holly & berries). I got a ton of compliments & tips for Christmas by coloring dogs w/ owners permission. BTW welshwindiesmom - that's exactly what I did - got the bichon for practice (love him, too) but I had blk min poos & shih's - they don't color well ;^) On another group, a lady did a blue snowflake design that was awesome! Also a dolphin one that I'd never get right. Tracy |

Your Welcom LilWelsh We want Pictures!!!!
Thanks imthetlc~ that would be me, the dolphine & snowflakes etc arnt really that hard, I used blowpens & stencils. remember the snowflake cut outs that kids make for christmas decorations? (take sheet of paper, fold in half then again and again, cut bits out of the edges, fold out... Whah-lah! Snowflake!) I just made some of those but left the outer edges intact to prevenbt overspray and used like a stencil with the blowpens. |

Well, wattadog - you're the professional artist when it comes to coloring IMHO. The art you infused with those designs are awesome. I'm just playing with plastic pre-bought Christmas stencils. I'm having modem & camera troubles - grrr! as well as phone, can call out, but not receive & that happens alot. |

The Manic Panic from Sally's Beauty Supply is awesome. Very intense color, and seems to last. It does take a while to get it all colored, but is well worth it. Talk to pixiedust- she is the queen of color! |

Look under breeds and then finishing touches. Look for Dawn's Chalking How to's. when I do chalk it lasts until I wash it out.It has never faded when I have done it. For me it's the blo-pens that fades sometimes. Really it just boils down to what works best for you. Easter Eskies! sweet. Wattadog does super stencil work! blo-pens are the most fun to work with. quick and easy. not to costly and easy to get. |

Hi, I love the pictures. I have a small cream poodle with a few aprocot patches. I just colored her using the pet silk fun colors. I used red mixed with a little white and she turned out the prettiest peachy pink color. She looks like she was born this color. I used a soft toothbrush around the eyes and on the face. Only have to leave on 10 minutes and rinse and condition afterwards. Very easy and she didn't seem to mind the application at all. It's been three weeks and the color fades a little after each bath but still very pretty. I use coat handler shampoo and conditioner which is very gentle. |

I used food coloring that you can buy at the grocery store and I just put it where I wanted it on the dog and then let it set for a while and towel dried the dog. Problems with this are that when ever the dog gets wet it will transfer color! I dont reccomend not rinsing the dog after using food coloring however my colors didn't run together. |

Hi Justx - I like chalk - it's easy to apply and usually stays on the dog and not on the furniture/flooring/bedding. In my pet's case (a Shih Tzu) I started with a fully dry dog (that I hadn't washed in a few days) and soaked sidewalk chalk sticks in warm water for a few minutes. I applied the softened chalk to his coat while I was wearing gloves. When he was completely saturated, I blow-dried his coat and used inexpensive hairspray to set the color. He was a pink and blue dog for about 2 months, no bleeding. Others will have more advice - this is just what I found worked for me. I have chalked my dogs with not so good results (didn't blowdry properly, hairspray or whatever)... If I didn't have a grooming studio, I would have done it outside to lessen the mess. (and it can be messy!) Good luck and don't forget to post results! "Do not remove a fly from your friend's forehead with a hatchet." - chinese proverb

Hopefully it will work out well (hope he isn't too dark for that) if it doesn't work ill try the easter egg idea and mix gel food coloring with a gallon of water and then mix in 1/3 cup vinegar. **fingers crossed** hope it all turns out all right if not it'll either wash out or grow back :D |

The topknot was done with the Bold color blue blopen with a bit of purple on top. The leg poms are with a green blopen... I think it was also Bold, as it turned out florescent. Since discovering blo pens, that's all I use to color with now. Wayyyyyyy too easy!!!! LOL ~Meg www.parkhillpooch.com

I currently have a Manic Panic addiction. I have used it on a Maltese, a cat, and myself with no ill effects. Sally's carries it and has just about every color under the sun (except green which I am really disappointed about.) The color doesn't budge unless you shampoo it. That's the only time I notice it coming off my head onto my towels. I've washed my hair about 14 times since I colored it and my color still looks great. Every life should have nine cats...and I DO!
