HOT DIGGITY DOGS!

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR USING HOT DIGGITY DOGS! PROFESSIONAL MOBILE
PET SERVICE. IT IS MY HOPE THAT AS YOUR GROOMER, WE CAN WORK TOGETHER AS A
TEAM, ALONG WITH YOUR VET, TO GIVE YOUR PET THE BEST CARE POSSIBLE, AND TO
ASSURE A LONG, HEALTHY, AND HAPPY LIFE FOR YOUR PET.
FIRST, I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MYSELF, AND MY
MOBILE PET SERVICE. BEFORE BECOMING A FULL-TIME PROFESSIONAL PET GROOMER, I
WORKED IN THE COMMUNITY AS A NURSE FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 YEARS, DUE TO
"BURN-OUT" AND THE NEED FOR A CHANGE, I TURNED MY LOVE OF ANIMALS INTO A
VERY REWARDING NEW PROFESSION. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY CREATIVE, SO I TOOK
TO GROOMING QUITE NATURALLY. AFTER LEARNING MY CRAFT FROM A CERTIFIED
MASTER GROOMER, AND SPENDING TWO YEARS UNDER HER CLOSE SUPERVISION, IT WAS
TIME FOR ME TO START UP ON MY OWN. I BOUGHT MY FIRST MOBILE UNIT IN 1995,
AND GOT MY NEWEST VEHICLE IN 1996. BEING AN ANIMAL LOVER ALL OF MY LIFE, I
BELIEVE THAT ALTHOUGH A CLEAN, NICE LOOKING PET IS IMPORTANT, I WILL PUT
ABOVE ALL ELSE THE HUMANE TREATMENT OF ALL PETS ENTRUSTED TO MY CARE. I
REGULARLY ATTEND CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARS THAT ARE ESPECIALLY DESIGNED
FOR PET CARE PROFESSIONALS TO SHARPEN MY SKILLS AND TO LEARN THE NEWEST
GROOMING TECHNIQUES. IN ADDITION TO OFFERING PET GROOMING, I ALSO OFFER
ANOTHER UNIQUE SERVICE, WHICH IS IN YOUR HOME PET SITTING. I'LL GO INTO
THIS IN DEPTH A LITTLE LATER ON IN THIS NEWSLETTER.
WHEN A NEW CUSTOMER CALLS ME, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I AM ASKED IS
"HOW MUCH WILL THIS COST ME?" I CAN GIVE YOU A ROUGH ESTIMATE OVER THE
PHONE, BUT UNTILL I ACTUALLY SEE, AND GROOM THE PET, I CANNOT QUOTE A REAL
PRICE. THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT NO TWO ANIMALS ARE ALIKE. I MUST TAKE
INTO CONSIDERATION THE SIZE OF THE PET, OVERALL COAT CONDITION, FREQUENCY
OF GROOMINGS, DISPOSITION OF THE ANIMAL, AND THE OVERALL TIME INVOLVED IN
THE PROCESS. WHILE MRS.SMITHS COCKER SPANIEL WILL TAKE 90 MINUTES TO FULLY
GROOM, MRS.JONES COCKER SPANIEL WILL TAKE 2 1/2 HOURS FOR THE EXACT SAME
TRIM. EVERY PET IS UNIQUE, AND EVERY PET OWNER NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF THIS.
I DO TRY TO KEEP MY PRICES AS LOW AS I CAN, AND AT THE SAME TIME USE ONLY
THE HIGHEST QUALITY GROOMING PRODUCTS AND EQUIPMENT.

                                                     2
EVERY SUMMER IN JULY AND AUGUST, I ADJUST MY PRICES ACCORDING TO COST
OF LIVING EXPENSES, AND INCREASED OPERATIONAL EXPENSES. EACH PET OWNER WILL
BE NOTIFIED OF ANY INCREASES ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS.
PAYMENT FOR MY SERVICES CAN BE CASH OR A CHECK MADE PAYABLE TO CASH
ONLY. NO CHECKS MADE OUT TO HOT DIGGITY DOGS PLEASE. NO CREDIT CARDS
ACCEPTED. GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE ALSO AVAILABLE. THERE IS A $20.00 SERVICE
CHARGE FOR ALL RETURNED CHECKS . TIPPING IS NOT NECESSARY, BUT IT IS
CERTAINLY APPRECIATED!! I DO PUT ALL TIPS ASIDE TO HELP DEFRAY THE COST OF
THE ABOVE MENTIONED SEMINARS.
AFTER OUR APPOINTMENT, YOU WILL RECIEVE A REMINDER CARD IN THE MAIL,
IN ABOUT 4 WEEKS. THIS IS SO THAT YOU WILL REMEMBER TO CALL ME BEFORE YOUR
PET IS IN DIRE NEED, AS I AM USUALLY BOOKED UP ANYWHERE FROM 2 TO 3 WEEKS
IN ADVANCE, DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF THE YEAR. THE BEST TIME TO MAKE YOUR
NEXT APPOINTMENT THOUGH, IS WHEN I AM STILL AT YOUR HOME, GROOMING YOUR
PET. THIS IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO TO INSURE AN APPOINTMENT THAT IS
CONVIENIENT TO THEM, ESPECIALLY IF AN EVENING OR SATURDAY APPOINTMENT IS
NEEDED. EVENING APPOINTMENTS ARE AVAILABLE FROM APRIL THROUGH OCTOBER.
EVENING AND SATURDAY APPOINTMENTS ARE USUALLY BOOKED UP FOR ABOUT 6-8 WEEKS
IN ADVANCE!
WHEN CALLING FOR AN APPOINTMENT, YOU WILL MOST LIKELY GET MY VOICE MAIL
SERVICE. PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO LEAVE ME A MESSAGE. I DO CHECK MY
MESSAGES FREQUENTLY, AND WILL RETURN YOUR CALL AS SOON AS I CAN. PLEASE
FEEL FREE TO CALL ME ANYTIME NIGHT OR DAY! AND PLEASE LEAVE ME A MESSAGE
THAT INCLUDES YOUR NAME AND PHONE NUMBER, SO THAT I CAN RETURN YOUR CALL AS
QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
AS A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO YOU FOR REFERRING ME TO OTHERS, I WILL GIVE
YOU $2.00 OFF OF YOUR NEXT GROOMING. JUST MENTION IT TO ME AT OUT NEXT
APPOINTMENT.
DUE TO CUSTOMER REQUEST, I NOW CARRY A SMALL SUPPLY OF SLICKER
BRUSHES, COLOGNE, AND PROFESSIONAL QUALITY SHAMPOOS FOR SALE. THESE ARE THE
PRODUCTS THAT I USE, AND RECOMMEND YOU USE IN BETWEEN OUR REGULAR GROOMING
SESSIONS. THEY ARE THE BEST.

PLEASE!
TAKE THE TIME TO BRUSH YOUR PET ON A WEEKLY BASIS! IT SHOULD ONLY TAKE YOU
ABOUT 15 MINUTES A WEEK, AND YOU AND YOUR PET WILL GET USED TO THIS ROUTINE
IF YOU START TODAY!
I REALLY HATE TO HAVE TO SHAVE OFF A POTENTIALLY BEAUTIFUL COAT, AND TO
BRUSH IT ALL OUT IS VERY PAINFUL TO YOUR PET, AND WILL BE VERY PAINFUL ON
YOUR WALLET! I MUST CHARGE AN EXTRA FEE FOR THE ADDITIONAL TIME IT TAKES ME
TO DE-MATT THE COAT (WHEN IT IS POSSIBLE) AND SOMETIMES (MOST OF THE TIME)
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO COMB OUT, AND THE ENTIRE COAT MUST BE SHAVED OFF!!
MANY OF YOU ASK ME, 'HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY PET GROOMED?" CATS
NEED A BATH ONLY WHEN VERY SOILED, OR WHEN YOU NOTICE A DRAMATIC INCREASE
IN SHEDDING, DANDER, AND FUR-BALLS. MOST DOG BREEDS SHOULD BE GROOMED ABOUT
EVERY 4 TO 8 WEEKS. EVERY 6 WEEKS IS A GOOD RULE OF THUMB. IF YOU KEEP YOUR
PET IN A LONGER COAT , IT MAY NEED GROOMING SOONER. I DO OFFER A 'BATH AND
BRUSH' ONLY SERVICE, AND THIS IS 1/2 PRICE OF THE FULL GROOMING. THIS
APPLIES TO ANY PET THAT WOULD USUALLY GET ITS HAIR CUT. SHORT COATED/FLAT
COATED BREEDS USUALLY NEED A GROOMING ABOUT EVERY 8 TO 12 WEEKS. NAILS NEED
TRIMMING, AND ANAL GLANDS NEED TO BE EMPTIED ON A REGULAR BASIS. IF YOU ARE
NOT SURE, PLEASE ASK YOUR VET WHAT THEY RECOMMEND.
FEEL FREE TO CALL ME ANYTIME YOU HAVE A GROOMING QUESTION OR PROBLEM
WITH THE GROOMING. I AIM TO PLEASE AND WILL DO ALL THAT I CAN TO 'MAKE IT
RIGHT' IF YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED. ALL I ASK IS THAT YOU LET ME KNOW AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE.
I PUT OUT A BI-MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR YOU AND YOUR PET. I HOPE THAT
THESE WILL BE FUN AND ENTERTAINING, AS WELL AS AN INFORMATIVE WAY FOR US TO
CARE FOR THE PETS WE LOVE.
IN MY NEWSLETTERS, I OFFER FREE WANT-ADS TO MY CUSTOMERS. IF YOU HAVE
A PET, OR ANY PET RELATED ITEMS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SELL, GIVE AWAY, OR
IF THERE IS AN ITEM THAT YOU NEED, PLEASE LET ME KNOW ABOUT IT, AND I WILL
GLADLY PUT IT IN MY NEXT NEWSLETTER. THIS WOULD INCLUDE "FREE TO A GOOD
HOME..." 'WANTED FOR/TO STUD" OR ANY SUCH ADS. PLEASE PUT YOUR AD DOWN IN
WRITING FOR ME, AS THIS WOULD MAKE IT MUCH EASIER FOR ME. THANKS!!

                                      4
I ALSO OFFER DENTAL CARE FOR THE PETS IN THE FORM OF TOOTH BRUSHING,
THIS IS SOMETHING MOST OFTEN OVERLOOKED BY EVEN THE MOST RESPONSIBLE PET
OWNERS, AND IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE ON A REGULAR BASIS. YOUR PET
SHOULD HAVE A DENTAL CHECK-UP DONE BY THE VET ON A YEARLY BASIS. IF YOU
CANNOT MANAGE THIS BY YOURSELF, I CAN BRUSH THE TEETH FOR YOU. I HAVE A
'DENTAL START-UP KIT' WHICH CONSISTS OF A TOOTHBRUSH AND TOOTHPASTE MADE
ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR PET. THE ONE TIME ONLY COST OF THIS IS $5.00 AND THERE
IS AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE OF $5.00 EVERY TIME I BRUSH YOUR PETS TEETH. I WILL
GLADLY SHOW YOU HOW TO DO THIS AT HOME IF YOU WISH.
YOU MAY BE ASKED TO SIGN A RELEASE OF LIABILITY FORM IN SUCH CASES AS
AN EXTREMELY MATTED COAT TO BE REMOVED, SENIOR PETS, PREGNENT PETS, CATS,
OR PETS WHO HAVE BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS.
I WOULD PREFER IT IF THERE ARE NONE OF THE PETS "FAMILY" IN THE
GROOMING VAN DURING THE GROOMING PROCEDURE. THIS TENDS TO MAKE THE PETS
MORE ANXIOUS, AND HARDER FOR ME TO DO A PROPER JOB.
DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY BUSINESS IS MOBILE, AND THAT I WORK OUTDOORS, I
MUST TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION ALL WEATHER ADVISORIES. IF THE TEMPERATURE IS
BELOW 8 TO 10 DEGREES, I WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE OUR APPOINTMENT BECAUSE MY
WATER TANKS FREEZE AND MY PIPES WILL BURST. IF THE TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 90
DEGREES, THE PET COULD SUFFER FROM HEATSTROKE. EVEN THOUGH THE VAN HAS A
HEATER AND AN AIR-CONDITIONER, I PUT THE PETS SAFETY FIRST. WHEN THERE IS A
TRAVELERS ADVISORY DUE TO ROAD CONDITIONS OR AN ELECTRICAL STORM, OR STORM
WARNINGS POSTED, I WILL HAVE TO LET YOU KNOW, AND RESCHEDULE. I REGRET ANY
INCONVIENIENCE THAT THIS MAY CAUSE, BUT IN THE PAST 3 YEARS, I HAVE ONLY
HAD TO CANCEL ABOUT 6 TIMES.
PLEASE SEE THE ATTATCHED INFORMATION SHEETS ABOUT YOUR PETS
DENTAL HEALTH AND IN YOUR HOME PET SITTING.

THANK-YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME OUT OF YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE AND READING THIS.

                                                       SUE, AT HOT DIGGITY DOGS!

COMMON SKIN DISORDERS
**********
FEW DIAGNOSES ARE AS CONFUSING TO DOG OWNERS AS SEBORRHEA. THIS IS
BECAUSE "SEBORRHEA" IS OFTEN USED AS A CATCH-ALL TERM WHENEVER WE SEE RED,
DRY, SCALY, ITCHY, GREASY, OR SMELLY SKIN ON OUR DOG, REGARDLESS OF THE
CAUSE. UNFORTUNATELY, MOST SKIN PROBLEMS THAT CAUSE ANY DEGREE OF
INFLAMMATION RESULT IN THESE EXACT CHANGES. PROBABLY, LESS THAN 1% OF ALL
DOGS SO LABLED, ACTUALLY HAVE TRUE SEBORRHEA.
A MORE PROPER DESCRIPTION FOR THE COLLECTION OF PROBLEMS IS
"KERATINIZATION DISORDERS"
KERATIN IS THE SCALE ON THE SKINS SURFACE, AND ALL OF THE ABOVE
DESCRIBED SYMPTOMS CAN BE EXPLAINED BY AN ABNORMALITY OF THE ARRANGEMENT OF
THIS KERATIN ON THE SKIN SURFACE. SOME ARRANGEMENTS MAKE THE SKIN DRY, SOME
GREASY, SOME INFLAMMED.
ALLERGIES COMMONLY RESULT IN THESE KERATINAZATION DISORDERS, SO CAN
HORMONAL PROBLEMS, INHERITED DISEASES, INFECTIONS, CANCERS, AND AUTO-IMMUNE
DISORDERS. BY FAR, MOST OCCUR DUE TO AN UNDERLYING PROBLEM. SO, IF WE CAN
IDENTIFY AND TREAT THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM, THE KERATINIZATION DISORDER WILL
TAKE CARE OF ITSELF.
TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THIS BETTER, LETS LOOK AT HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS.
THE SKIN IS CONSTANTLY IN A PROCESS OF RENEWAL, AND THERE IS AN ORDERLY
PROGRESSION FOR A PLUMP EPIDERMAL CELL TO EVOLVE INTO DEAD SURFACE SCALE.
THIS TAKES ABOUT 21 DAYS, AND THEN ANOTHER 21 DAYS FOR THE SCALE TO BE SHED
INTO THE ENVIRONMENT. IF SOME PROBLEM DISTURBES THIS SEQUENCE, AND THE
SCALE COLLECTS HAPHAZARDLY ON THE SKIN SURFACE, THERE CAN BE SCALING,
CRUSTING, AND HAIR LOSS. THE NORMAL BACTERIA ON THE SKIN INCREASE IN NUMBER
AS THEY HAVE MORE DEBRIS ON WHICH TO FEED, AND AS THEY BREAK DOWN THE FATTY
SUBSTANCES IN THE SCALE, THEY GIVE OFF A RANCID ODOR. THESE BACTERIA
FLOURISH, CAUSING INFECTION TO SET IN. MEANWHILE FIDO IS SCRATCHING LIKE
MAD, AND CAUSING FURTHER SKIN DAMAGE!
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SEEK PROMPT PROFESSIONAL VETRINARY CARE,
SO THAT A TRUE DIAGNOSIS CAN BE MADE, AND PROPER TREATMENT GIVEN. YOUR VET
WILL PROBABLY USE A STEP-BY-STEP AND THOROUGH APPROACH. THIS MIGHT INCLUDE
SKIN-SCRAPINGS, BLOOD TESTS, BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL CULTURES, ALLERGY
ASSESSMENTS, AND EVEN A BIOPSY. YOUR VET WILL DETERMINE WHICH TESTS ARE
APPROPRIATE. UNTILL A CORRECT DIAGNOSIS IS MADE, YOU CANNOT BEGIN THE
CORRECT TREATMENT.
TREATMENT MUST BE VIGORUS AND INTENSIVE, THOUGH IN MOST CASES THE PETS
HEALTH IS NOT COMPROMISED. YOUR PET MAY LOOK DREADFUL, BUT ONLY RARELY ARE
THESE SKIN PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH INTERNAL PROBLEMS.
FREQUENT BATHING WITH THE CORRECT TYPE OF MEDICATED SHAMPOOS AND TOPICAL
TREATMENT OF THE SKIN, AS WELL AS DIETARY SUPPLEMENTATION MAY MAKE THE
CONDITION MORE TOLERABLE. YOUR VET WILL ADVISE YOU AS TO WHICH PRODUCTS
WILL WORK THE BEST ON YOUR PET FOR HIS/HER SPECIFIC PROBLEM. THIS IS NOT
SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN TREAT BY YOURSELF WITH OVER-THE -COUNTER PRODUCTS.
DOGS WITH KERATINIZATION PROBLEMS BENEFIT FROM A GOOD BASIC DIET, AND
SUPPLEMENTING THAT DIET WITH ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS ON A REGULAR BASIS. THIS
MAY HELP TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THE SCALING.
ALLERGIES ARE PROBABLY THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF KERATINIZATION
DISORDERS IN DOGS, FROM INHALANTS, FOODS, DRUG ERUPTIONS, AND CONTACT
SENSITIVITIES. PARASITES, ESPECIALLY FLEAS AND MITES, BACTERIAL INFECTIONS
AND RINGWORM CAN ALSO APPEAR VERY SIMILAR. THIS IS WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT
TO SEE YOUR VET FOR PROPER DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT.
SOMETIMES, NUTRITION PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN CAUSING THESE
PROBLEMS. "ZINC-RESPONSIVE" DERMATOSIS IS A SCALING SKIN DISEASE THAT IS
IMPROVED BY ADDING ZINC TO THE DIET. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOUR PET IS
ZINC DEFICIENT, BUT RATHER THAT IT HAS A HIGHER THAT NORMAL REQUIREMENT FOR
ZINC. SOME INGREDIENTS IN THE DOGS FOOD HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO DECREASE THE
ZINC BEING ABSORBED. CALCIUM SUPPLIMENTS ARE A MAJOR OFFENDER, AND
GENERALLY SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO A RAPIDLY GROWING DOG. SOME DOGS ARE
PREDISPOSED TO A GENETIC DEFECT THAT RESULTS IN A DECREASED ABILITY TO
ABSORB ZINC FROM THE INTESTINES. THIS WOULD MEAN THAT A ZINC SUPPLIMENT IS
NEEDED. THE SYMPTOMS OF THIS ARE: ACCUMULATION OF SCALE AND CRUST ON THE
FACE,ELBOWS, AND HOCKS.
PUPPIES OF RAPIDLY GROWING BREEDS THAT HAVE BEEN SUPPLIMENTED (ESPECIALLY
WITH CALCIUM) MAY ALSO HAVE STUNTED GROWTH, BONE DEFORMITIES, AND POOR
APPETITES. TREATMENT FOR THIS IS USUALLY TO ELIMINATE THE SUPPLIMENTATION,
AND RETURN THEM TO A BALANCED DIET. DOGS WITH INHERITED DEFECTS WILL
PROBABLY REQUIRE SOME FORM OF ZINC SUPPLIMENTATION FOR LIFE.
THERE IS ALSO A CONDITION KNOWN AS "VITAMIN A RESPONSIVE" DERMATOSIS.
THIS IS NOT A DEFICIENCY SYNDROME, BUT RATHER A SKIN CONDITION THAT
RESPONDS TO HIGH DOSES OF VITAMIN A. THE PRINCIPAL BREED AFFECTED BY THIS
IS THE COCKER SPANIEL, BUT OTHER BREEDS ARE AFFECTED AS WELL. THE SYMPTOMS
ARE: DANDRUFF, HAIRLOSS, MARKED CRUSTING, ESPECIALLY BAD ON THE BACK. THE
CENTER OF THE PROBLEM IS THE HAIR FOLLICLE, WHERE THE SCALING AND THE
CRUSTING BEGINS. YOUR VET WILL BE ABLE TO VERIFY THIS WITH A BIOPSY, AND
THE TREATMENT WOULD INCLUDE MEGA-DOSES OF VITAMIN A DAILY, USUALLY FOR
LIFE. THIS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY THOUGH, AS VITAMIN A CAN BE TOXIC.
THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN DECIDE TO DO BY YOURSELF, YOUR VET MUST
BE CONSULTED, AND WILL DETERMINE THE SAFE DOSEAGE OF THE VITAMIN TO BE
GIVEN!!!!!
ALTHOUGH KERATINIZATION DISORDERS CAUSED BY OTHER PROBLEMS WILL
RESOLVE ON THEIR OWN WHEN THE PRIMARY CAUSE IS IDENTIFIED AND TREATED, THIS
DOES NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT. YOU WILL USUALLY SEE IMPROVEMENT IN ABOUT 5 TO 7
WEEKS. THIS IS BECAUSE IT TAKES NEW SKIN CELLS ABOUT 3 WEEKS TO MAKE IT TO
THE SKIN SURFACE, AND ABOUT 3 MORE WEEKS TO BE SHED. SINCE NO TREATMENT IS
INSTANTANEOUS, SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT USUALLY RESULTS IN RESOLUTION OF THE
KERATINIZATION DISORDER IN 3 TO 4 MONTHS. PLEASE BE UNDERSTANDING AND
PATIENT, MIRACLES DO NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT!
SUE, HOT DIGGITY DOGS!

OF MITES AND MANGE
MITES ARE SMALL CRAB-LIKE CREATURES THAT CAN FEED ON THE SKIN OF PETS AND
PEOPLE. THE TERM MANGE REFERS TO ANY AND ALL PROBLEMS THAT ARE CAUSED BY
MITES. WHILE SOME FORMS OF MANGE ARE HEREDITARY, SOME ARE CONTAGEOUS
BETWEEN ANIMALS AND PEOPLE, AND SOME JUST AFFECT ANIMALS. BECAUSE OF THIS
DIVERSITY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER EACH FORM OF MANGE INDIVIDUALLY.

EAR MITES:
EAR MITES CAUSE OTODECTIC MANGE. AND IS HIGHLY CONTAGEOUS AMONG PETS! MANY
ANIMALS CAN BE CARRIERS, BUT NOT HAVE SYMPTOMS THEMSELVES. BECAUSE THEY
APPEAR NORMAL, THESE PETS CAN BE A REAL FACTOR IN THE SPREAD OF MITES. THEY
OFTEN GO UNSUSPECTED WHEN A PROBLEM OCCURS IN OTHER PETS. IT IS NOT EASY TO
DIAGNOSE EAR MITES, BUT IT IS SUSPECTED IN ANIMALS WITH HEAVY EAR
DISCHARGE. MANY OF US PASS THIS OFF AS AN "EAR INFECTION". SOME DOGS WILL
HAVE A DARK BROWN EAR DISCHARGE THAT RESEMBLES COFFEE GROUNDS. HEAD SHAKING
MAY BE SEEN. THIS IS MORE PREVALENT IN BREEDS WITH FLOPPY EARS. IF YOU
NOTICE THESE SYMPTOMS, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR VET IMMEDIATLY! ONLY THE VET CAN
MAKE A REAL DIAGNOSIS BY USING AN OTOSCOPE OR EXAMINING THE DISCHARGE UNDER
THE MICROSCOPE. THE TREATMENT OF EARMITES IS MORE DIFFICULT THAN YOU WOULD
THINK, BECAUSE THE MITES ARE QUITE MOBILE, AND THEY WILL CRAWL OUT OF THE
WAY OF THE INSECTICIDE, UNTILL IT WEARS OFF, AND THEN RETURN WHEN IT IS
SAFE. A GOOD FLEA BATH AT THE TIME OF MEDICATING THE PET IS AN ESSENTIAL
PART OF THE TREATMENT. ALSO, ALL PETS IN THE HOME MUST BE TREATED AT THE
SAME TIME TO PREVENT CROSS-CONTAMINATION, EVEN IF THE OTHER PETS SEEM
UNEFFECTED.

SCABIES:
SARCOPTIC MANGE OR "SCABIES" IS PROBABLY THE ITCHIEST CONDITION AFFECTING
PETS. THE MITE RESPONSIBLE IS ALSO CAPABLE OF BITING PEOPLE, ALTHOUGH IT
DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ABLE TO REPRODUCE AND LAY EGGS ON THEM. THIS MITE
BURROWS INTO THE UPPERMOST LAYERS OF A DOGS SKIN AND CREATES INTENSE
ITCHINESS. THE PREFERRED AREAS ARE THE EDGES OF THE EARS, THE ELBOWS, THE
HOCKS, AND THE BREASTBONE AND OTHER SPARSELY HAIRED AREAS. YOUR VET CAN
MAKE AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOUR PET HAS THIS CONDITION.
ALL ANIMALS IN THE HOUSE WILL NEED TO BE TREATED, BUT HUMANS USUALLY DO NOT
NEED TREATMENT. YOUR VET WILL PRESCRIBE THE TREATMENT PLAN THAT WILL BEST
SUIT YOUR NEEDS.

"WALKING DANDRUFF": (CHEYLETIELLOSIS)
THESE MITES DO NOT BURROW UNDER THE SKIN, THEY FEED ON THE SCALES PRESENT
ON THE SKIN SURFACE. THEY ARE CONTAGEOUS TO BOTH ANIMALS AND PEOPLE, AND
ARE MOST COMMONLY SEEN ON CATS AND DOGS. THIS MITE IS ALSO CAPABLE OF
LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT, OFF OF YOUR PET FOR UP TO 10 DAYS.
SINCE PEOPLE CAN BE AFFECTED, QUICK DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT IS
RECOMMENDED.SYMPTOMS MAY BE INTENSE ITCHING, DANDRUFF, OR NO SYMPTOMS AT
ALL. THE MITES CAN BE SEEN BY THE NAKED EYE, OR WITH THE USE OF MAGNIFYING
GLASS. YOUR VET WILL PRESCRIBE A TREATMENT PLAN.

CHIGGERS:
THE BITES OF CHIGGER MITES ARE QUITE IRRITATING AND ITCHY, AND ARE MOST
LIKELY TO OCCUR ON THE FEET AND HEAD. YOU MAY SEE TINY ORANGE DOTS ON THE
SKIN. YOU WOULD PROBABLY NOTICE AN INTENSE LICKING OF THE FEET. IRRITATION
MAY OCCUR FOR SEVERAL DAYS AFTER A BITE. IT IS MOST OFTEN SEEN IN THE LATE
SUMMER OR FALL . THIS IS EASY TO TREAT, BUT OF COURSE YOUR VET WILL MAKE
THE PROPER DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLAN FOR YOU.

NASAL MITES: (PNEUMONYSSOIDES CANINUM)
THIS IS A NASAL OR SINUS MITE OF THE DOG. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE A RUNNY ROSE,
SNEEZING, FACIAL ITCHINESS, OR RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS. IT IS LARGE ENOUGH TO
BE SEEN WITHOUT A MICROSCOPE AND MAY BE FOUND WANDERING AROUND THE NOSE AND
MUZZLE AREA. YOUR VET CAN MAKE AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLAN FOR
YOU.

PLEASE SEE YOUR VET ON A REGULAR BASIS, AND IF YOU FIND THAT YOUR PET IS
SUFFERING FROM "SOME KIND OF ITCHING" PROBLEM, BUT DO NOT THINK IT HAS
FLEAS OR TICKS, PLEASE LET YOUR VET MAKE A PROPER DIAGNOSIS. IT MAY BE A
FOOD ALLERGY, AN ENVIRONMENTAL ALLERGY, OR SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS.
OUR PETS GIVE US LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY, AND WE DO THE SAME FOR THEM. NO ONE
WANTS TO BELIEVE THAT THEIR PET HAS A MITE PROBLEM, BECAUSE WE ASSOCIATE
THIS WITH "BEING DIRTY" THERE IS NOT ANY TRUTH TO THAT. OUR PETS GO INTO
THE STRANGEST PLACES FOR FUN AND RECREATION, AND CAN FIND THEMSELVES WITH A
PARASITE PROBLEM QUITE EASILY.

FLEAS:
 FACTS,PREVENTION, AND TREATMENT OPTIONS.

NOBODY WANTS TO BELIEVE THAT THEIR PET MAY HAVE PARASITES. FOR MANY OF US,
OUR PETS ARE FAMILY MEMBERS, AND WE ASSOCIATE PARASITES ON THEM WITH BEING
DIRTY. THIS IS NOT TRUE. DID YOU KNOW THAT A FLEA CAN JUMP 150 TIMES ITS
OWN LENGTH? TO GET RID OF FLEAS YOU MUST TAKE A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH.
THIS MEANS THAT YOU MUST TREAT THE PET, THE HOME, AND THE OUTDOOR
ENVIRONMENT ALL AT THE SAME TIME, OR YOU WILL NOT BREAK THE LIFE CYCLE OF
THE FLEA.

KNOW YOUR ENEMY:
A FLEA STARTS OUT AS AN EGG. 2 BREEDING FLEAS WILL PRODUCE UP TO 600
OFFSPRING IN JUST 30 DAYS!! MOST OF THE EGGS ARE LAID ON THE PET,WITH SOME
FALLING OFF IN AND AROUND YOUR HOME. THESE EGGS WILL HATCH IN 2 TO 12 DAYS
INTO LARVE, AND THEN EVENTUALLY SPIN A COCOON CALLED THE PUPA. AT THIS
STAGE THEY ARE VISIBLE ONLY WITH A MICROSCOPE. AT THIS STAGE THEY ARE
RELATIVELY RESISTANT TO INSECTICIDES.THEY CAN REMAIN IN THIS STAGE FOR UP
TO 20 MONTHS, AND THEN, WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT, THEY HATCH INTO IMMATURE
ADULTS AND START THE CYCLE ALL OVER AGAIN. THEY CAN GO THROUGH THE ENTIRE
PROCESS IN AS LITTLE AS 3 WEEKS THOUGH. THE ADULT FLEA CAN LIVE AS LONG AS
12 MONTHS, BUT THEY NEED TO FEED REGULARLY ON THE BLOOD OF YOUR PET OR YOU.
THEY CAN LIVE UP TO 2 MONTHS WITH NO FOOD.NOT ALL PETS INFESTED WITH FLEAS
WILL HAVE PROBLEMS, WHILE SOME PETS ARE ALLERGIC, AND ONE FLEA BITE WILL
HAVE THEM IN A SCRATCHING FRENZY!

PREVENTION:
REGARDLESS OF WHAT CLAIMS ARE MADE BY VARIOUS COMPANIES, CURRENTLY THERE IS
NO UNIVERSAL FLEA REPELLENT THAT IS 100% EFFECTIVE. THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT
FLEAS IS TO KEEP ALL OF YOUR PETS IN A FLEA FREE ENVIRONMENT. ONCE YOU HAVE
FLEAS THOUGH, YOUR TREATMENT MUST BE COMPREHENSIVE, AND PLEASE REMEMBER
THAT THERE IS NO QUICK FIX. I URGE YOU TO DISCUSS THIS WITH YOUR VET AND
CHOOSE A PREVENTATIVE PROGRAM THAT WILL WORK THE BEST FOR YOU. YOUR VET IS
THE PERSON WHO IS MOST QUALIFIED TO ASSIST YOU WITH THE MANY CHIOCES THAT
ARE OUT THERE, AND THE VET IS GOING TO BE UP-TO-DATE WITH THE LATEST
PRODUCTS OUT ON THE MARKET. THERE ARE MANY GREAT PRODUCTS TO CHOOSE FROM,
SOME OF THE NEWEST AND MOST EFFECTIVE ARE "PROGRAM" THE PILL THAT PREVENTS
THE FLEAS WHO BITE THE PET FROM REPRODUCING. HOWEVER, THIS DOES NOT PREVENT
THE FLEA FROM ENTERING YOUR HOME ON YOUR PET, AND INFESTING THE HOUSE.
THESE FLEAS CAN STILL FEED ON HUMANS IN THE HOUSE, AND THERE IS A POTENTIAL
THAT ANY FLEA FEEDING ON YOU, AND NOT YOUR PET, CAN STILL REPRODUCE. THERE
IS ALSO "ADVANTAGE" A TOPICAL DROP THAT IS USED MONTHLY AFTER THE BATH
WHICH IS IN WIDE USE IN THE WARMER CLIMATES WHERE THERE IS NEVER A LET-UP
IN THE FLEA CYCLE. THIS TOPICAL DROP IS PLACED DIRECTLY ON THE PETS SKIN
AND QUICKLY PENETRATES INTO THE FUR. WHEN A FLEA BITES, IT DIES. THIS IS
THE PRODUCT THAT I PREFER, BUT PLEASE CONSULT YOUR VET AS TO WHAT HE/SHE
RECOMMENDS. I MUST ADMIT THAT I FIND FLEA COLLARS OK ON SMALL DOGS, BUT I
HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM DO MUCH GOOD ON MEDIUM AND LARGE DOGS. THERE ARE ALSO
FLEA SPRAYS AND POWDERS . THE POWDER THAT I RECOMMEND AND THAT I USE IS
CALLED "SEVIN" POWDER. IT IS AVAILABLE AT FRANKS NURSERIES AND OTHER SUCH
STORES. THIS PRODUCT IS APPLIED DIRECTLY ON YOUR PET, YOUR LAWN AND IN THE
HOME IF NEEDED. IT ALSO COMES IN A SPRAY, BUT THE POWDER IS THE MOST
EFFECTIVE. I RECOMMEND THIS AS A PREVENTATIVE. IT IS VERY INEXPENSIVE. IT
IS SAFE ON CATS AND DOGS, PUPPIES, AND KITTENS. IT ALSO REPELLS TICKS! WHAT
I DO IS POWDER THE PET ON A WEEKLY BASIS FROM THE 1ST OF APRIL THROUGH FALL
UNTILL THE FIRST HARD FROST. BY THEN, THE FLEA DANGER IS USUALLY PAST US
HERE IN MICHIGAN. I ALSO SPRINKLE IT ALL OVER MY FRONT AND BACK YARDS, TO
HELP PREVENT FLEA INFESTATION BY OUR WILDLIFE THAT HAPPEN TO CROSS MY
PROPERTY.I DO THIS ON A MONTHLY BASIS BEGINNING IN APRIL. I HAVE BEEN DOING
THIS FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS, AND AM HAPPY TO SAY THET I HAVEN'T HAD A FLEA
PROBLEM SINCE!
I MUST CAUTION YOU ABOUT INSECTICIDE REPELLENTS CONTAINING "DEET". THIS IS
THE BEST FLEA REPELLENT TO DATE, BUT POISONINGS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN
DOGS,CATS, AND PEOPLE, AND THIS SHOULD NOT BE USED INDISCRIMINATLY!!!
AGAIN, YOUR VET WILL LEAD YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AS TO WHAT WILL WORK
BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR PET. OF THE INSECTICIDES, "PYRETHRINS" ARE PROBABLY
THE SAFEST AND MILDEST REPELLANTS. PRODUCTS DERIVED FROM CITRUS PULP, SUCH
AS D-LIMONENE AND LINALOOL AND NATURAL PRODUCTS SUCH AS EUCALYPTUS,
PENNYROYAL, ROSEMARY, WORMWOOD, OR CITRONELLA ARE ALSO FREQUENTLY USED WITH
SOME SUCCESS. AVONS "SKIN-SO-SOFT" USED BY DILUTING 1 TO 3 TABLESPOONS IN A
GALLON OF WATER, AND SPRITZING LIGHTLY ON THE COAT CAN BE USED AS A
REPELLANT, BUT TOO MUCH WILL RESULT IN A GREASY LOOKING COAT. THE NATURAL
APPROACH IS TO BE COMMENDED, BUT PLEASE BE AWARE THAT POISONINGS HAVE BEEN
REPORTED

WITH THE CITRUS BASED PRODUCTS AS WELL AS PENNYROYAL, AND VIRTUALLY ANY
PRODUCT IS CAPABLE OF CAUSING PROBLEMS. THIS IS WHY I STRESS THE IMPORTANCE
OF CONSULTING YOUR VET IN THESE MATTERS!!

FLEA CONTROL:
TO EFFECTIVELY CONTROL FLEAS, YOU MUST FIRST UNDERSTAND WHAT IT TAKES TO
INTERFERE WITH THE FLEA LIFE CYCLE. YOUR GOAL IS TO GET THE FLEAS OFF YOUR
PET, OUT OF YOUR HOUSE, OFF OF YOUR PROPERTY, AND THEN TO KEEP IT THAT
WAY!! FLEA BATHS, SPRAYS AND POWDERS, AND FREQUENT VACUUMING ALL HELP, BUT
ON THEIR OWN, NONE OF THESE WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
#1. TREAT THE PET: NOT FINDING EVEDENCE OF FLEAS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY
ARE NOT CAUSING PROBLEMS. IT IS A SAD BUT TRUE FACT THAT FOR EVERY FLEA YOU
SEE ON YOUR PET, THERE ARE 100 TO 300 FLEAS IN THE IMMEDIATE ENVIRONMENT.
ALL PETS IN THE HOME SHOULD BE BATHED IN A GOOD, PROFESSIONAL QUALITY FLEA
SHAMPOO TO REMOVE DIRT AND FLEAS. THIS WILL KILL THE FLEAS ON THE PET, BUT
WILL NOT REPELL THE FLEAS AFTER THE BATH. THIS IS WHEN YOU WILL USE THE
FLEA REPELLENT ON THE PET THAT WAS RECOMMENDED TO YOU BY THE VET. DO NOT
RELY ON A FLEA SHAMPOO ALONE TO CONTROL THE PROBLEM!

IN-HOME FLEA CONTROL:
#1. YOUR GOAL SHOULD BE TO NOT ONLY KILL THE ADULT FLEAS, BUT TO INTERFERE
WITH THE LIFE CYCLE. THIS IS BY ALL MEANS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP FOR TOTAL
FLEA CONTROL! VACUUMING SHOULD BE DONE VERY WELL AS A FIRST STEP, AND THEN
NOT REPEATED FOR 7 TO 10 DAYS TO AVIOD REMOVING THE INSECTICIDE. ADD SOME
"SEVIN" POWDER OR OTHER SUCH PRODUCT TO THE VACUUM BAG BEFOREHAND, AS THIS
WILL GO A LONG WAY TO PREVENT THE EGGS AND LARVE FROM HATCHING IN THE BAG
LATER.

#2. APPLY A COMMERCIAL INSECTICIDE ALL AROUND TO KILL THE ADULT FLEAS.
AGAIN YOUR VET WILL RECOMMEND THE BEST PRODUCT FOR YOU. THIS WILL ASSURE
YOU THAT NO ACCIDENTAL POISONING TO THE PET WILL OCCUR. CONSIDER A
"PYRETHRIN" BASED PRODUCT, WHICH IS SAFEST. IT IS CRITICAL TO WEAR
APPROPRIATE FACEWEAR TO AVOID INHALING ANY SUCH SUBSTANCES. ALSO PLEASE
FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS ABOUT HOW LONG YOU AND YOUR PET SHOULD BE OUT OF THE
HOUSE WHILE THE INSECTICIDE IS BEING APPLIED. ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE IS A
COMMERCIAL APPLICATION BY A "PEST-CONTROL" COMPANY, SUCH AS "ORKIN".

#3. KILL THE FLEA EGGS AND LARVE, WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY GROW TO BE
TROUBLESOME ADULTS. THE PROBLEM WITH INSECTICIDES, OTHER THAN TOXICITY, IS
THAT THEY ONLY KILL ADULT FLEAS. THEY BARELY TOUCH THE IMMATURE FORMS.
BECAUSE OF THIS THE INSECTICIDE TREATMENTS SHOULD BE REPEATED EVERY 2 TO 4
WEEKS TO KILL ALL NEWLY HATCHED ADULTS. THERE ARE SOME PRODUCTS WHICH
CONTAIN "INSECT GROWTH REGULATORS" (IGR'S)
WHICH HAVE BEEN FORMULATED TO KILL IMMATURE FLEAS. THEY ARE INSECT HORMORES
RATHER THAN INSECTICIDES; THEY WORK BY PREVENTING FLEA EGGS AND LARVE IN
THE ENVIRONMENT FROM MATURING FURTHER. THEY WILL NOT KILL ADULT FLEAS.
PLEASE CONSULT YOUR VET AS TO WHICH WILL WORK BEST FOR YOU.

OUTDOOR FLEA CONTROL:
ONLY CERTAIN INSECTICIDES ARE LICENSED FOR OUTDOOR USE. (SEVIN POWDER IS)
MOST PRODUCTS NEED TO BE APPLIED ONCE OR TWICE AT 10 DAY INTERVALS. A GOOD
STRATEGY IS TO ALTERNATE PRODUCTS, SINCE FLEAS WILL DEVELOP A RESISTANCE TO
A SINGLE PRODUCT. I RECOMMEND THE USE OF SEVIN POWDER ON A MONTHLY BASIS.
I HOPE THAT ALL OF THIS INFORMATION IS HELPFUL TO YOU, AND NOT TOO
OVERWHELMING. THERE IS ALOT TO KNOW WHEN YOU REALLY WANT TO KEEP THE PETS
WE LOVE FREE OF PARASITES. IT IS NOT MY INTENTION TO "SELL" YOU ON ANY
PARTICULAR PRODUCT, BUT TO HELP YOU AND YOUR PET LIVE FREE OF THE PROBLEM
OF FLEAS. THEY TRULY ARE A CURSE! YOU HAVE UNDOUBTABLY NOTICED HOW MUCH
EMPHASIS I PUT IN YOU SEEKING GUIDANCE FROM YOUR VET. THE VET IS THE ONE
PROFESSIONAL WHO CAN GIVE YOU THE MOST RELIABLE AND UP TO DATE INFORMATION.
HE/SHE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT "TEAM MEMBER" BETWEEN YOU, THE PET OWNER, THE
PROFESSIONAL GROOMER AND THE VET. IT IS MY HOPE THAT WE CAN ALL WORK
TOGETHER FOR THE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS OF THE PETS WE LOVE SO MUCH.
THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME OUT OF YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE TO READ THIS OVER. I
HOPE IT WILL HELP!

 SUE. HOT DIGGITY DOGS!

TICKS AND OTHER PARASITES

TICKS ARE FOUND WORLDWIDE AND CAN CAUSE A VARITEY OF PROBLEMS. BECAUSE THEY
ARE BLOODSUCKERS, THEY CAN CAUSE SIGNIFICANT BLOOD LOSS IN OUR PETS, AND AT
THE SAME TIME, TRANSMIT MANY DISEASES, SUCH AS THE HIGHLY PUBLICISED LYME
DISEASE. MANY OF THESE DISEASES CAN ALSO OCCUR IN PEOPLE, BUT THEY ARE NOT
CONTAGEOUS FROM DOGS TO PEOPLE, OR FROM DOGS TO OTHER ANIMALS. THE DISEASES
ARE SPREAD ONLY BY THE BITE OF THE TICK.
TICK CONTROL: TO EFFECTIVELY DEAL WITH TICKS, YOU NEED TO FIRST UNDERSTAND
THEIR LIFESTYLE. IN THE DIFFERENT STAGES TICKS GO THROUGH DURING THEIR
DEVELOPMENT, THEY USUALLY HOP ON AND OFF MANY DIFFERENT ANIMALS. MOST ARE
PICKED UP BY PEOPLE AND PETS AS THEY WALK BY THEM OUTDOORS. THEY PREFER
MOIST, DARK AREAS. CAREFUL INSPECTION OF PETS AFTER WALKS THROUGH THE WOODS
AND CAREFUL REMOVAL OF ALL TICKS IS VERY IMPORTANT IN THE PREVENTION OF
DISEASE. A THOROUGH CHECK OF FEET, FOOTPADS, EARS,(INSIDE AND OUT) AND THE
HEAD AND NECK AREA IS A MUST.
APPLYING REPELLANTS BEFORE GOING OUT CAN BE HELPFUL IN PREVENTING TICK
BITES, BUT INSECTICIDES AND REPELLANTS SHOULD ONLY BE APPLIED TO DOGS
FOLLOWING APPROPRIATE VETRINARY ADVICE, SINCE INDISCRIMINATE USE CAN BE
DANGEROUS.
ANOTHER WAY TO PROTECT YOUR DOG IS TO APPLY A NEW TYPE OF TICK COLLAR THAT
CONTAINS AMITRAZ (PREVENTIC) THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT IS NOT A TRUE
INSECTICIDE AND WILL NOT KILL FLEAS ON THE DOG OR INTERFERE WITH FLEA
TREATMENTS. IT WILL PREVENT THE ATTATCHMENT OF THE TICKS TO THE SKIN AND
WILL CAUSE TICKS ALREADY ON THE SKIN TO DETACH THEMSELVES. A TICK MUST
OFTEN BE ATTATCHED FOR ABOUT 72 HOURS TO SPREAD DISEASE, AND AMITRAZ WILL
CAUSE THE TICK TO DETATCH WITHIN 48 HOURS.
REGULAR FLEA AND TICK COLLARS WILL NOT PREVENT A TICK FROM HITCHING A RIDE
ON YOUR PET, BUT THEY CAN AID IN TICK CONTROL. YOU CAN APPLY THE TICK
COLLAR IN MARCH OR APRIL, AND CHANGE IT AT REGULAR INTERVALS DEPENDING ON
THE INSECTICIDE IT CONTAINS. ALL INSECTICIDE BASED COLLARS ARE POTENTIALLY
DANGEROUS BECAUSE THEY PERPETUALLY EXPOSE THE PET TO INSECTICIDES. NOT
SURPRISING, BUT TRUE IS THE FACT THAT INSECTICIDE IMPREGNATED FLEA AND TICK
COLLARS ARE USUALLY NOT EFFECTIVE IN THE TREATMENT IF YOU ALREADY HAVE
TICKS, BECAUSE THE INSECTICIDE MUST DIRECTLY CONTACT THE TICK TO KILL IT.
IF DESPITE YOUR BEST EFFORTS, YOU SEE TICKS ON YOUR PET, IT WILL HAVE TO BE
TREATED APPROPRIATLY. IF THERE ARE ONLY A FEW, YOU COULD PLUCK THEM OUT
YOURSELF. FOR A WORSE INFESTATION, I RECOMMEND THAT YOU SEE YOUR VET
IMMEDIATLY.
IF YOU PLUCK THE TICKS OUT YOURSELF, YOU MUST KEEP IN MIND THAT THE ENTIRE
HEAD AND MOUTHPARTS MUST BE REMOVED. THESE MAY BE DEEPLY EMBEDDED IN THE
SKIN. I RECOMMEND THE USE OF TWEEZERS OR IF YOU USE YOUR FINGERS, WEAR
RUBBER GLOVES, OR USE A TISSUE OR PAPERTOWEL TO GRIP THE LITTLE PESTS! THE
TICK SHOULD BE GRASPED AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE TO THE PETS SKIN AND SHOULD
BE PULLED UPWARD WITH STEADY, EVEN PRESSURE. DO NOT SQUEEZE, CRUSH, OR
PUNCTURE THE BODY OF THE TICK OR YOU RISK EXPOSURE TO ANY DISEASE CARRIED
BY THE TICK!!! IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL, YOU COULD INFECT YOURSELF OR YOUR
PET AT THIS POINT. ONCE THE TICK IS REMOVED AND PROPERLY DISPOSED OF (FLUSH
IT OR BURN IT) YOU MUST DISINFECT YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER. IF YOU
SUSPECT THAT THE AREA ON YOUR PET IS GETTING INFECTED (REDNESS,SWELLING,
UNUSUAL WARMTH, DRAINAGE) SEE YOUR VET IMMEDIATLY!
ANOTHER TYPE OF TICK, IS THE "BROWN DOG TICK". THIS LITTLE PEST CAN HIDE
WITHIN HOUSES, INSULATION, ATTICS, DOG RUNS, KENNELS, AND DOG HOUSES, AND
NOT BE FOUND IN WOODED AREAS AT ALL. IF THIS IS THE TICK YOU HAVE, YOU WILL
NEED A PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL COMPANY TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM FOR
YOU.

FLIES:
FLIES CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR DOGS, EITHER BY BITING THEM, ESPECIALLY ON THE
EAR TIPS, OR BY LAYING THEIR EGGS, WHICH LATER HATCH INTO MAGGOTS IN
WOUNDS. FLY BITES OFTEN CAN BE AVOIDED BY VARIOUS PRODUCTS SUCH AS
"FLIES-OFF", INSECTICIDES, OR USING A THIN COATING OF PETROLEUM JELLY ON
THE EAR TIPS AND OTHER SUSCEPTABLE AREAS. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR PET OUTDOORS
WITH OPEN WOUNDS. SEE YOUR VET IF YOU NEED A PRODUCT TO KEEP THE FLIES
AWAY!

LICE:
THESE ARE UNCOMMON IN DOGS, AND THE LICE THAT DO AFFECT DOGS GENERALLY DO
NOT AFFECT PEOPLE. ADULT LICE AND NITS ARE LARGE ENOUGH TO BE SEEN BY THE
NAKED EYE, AND YOUR VET CAN EASILY DIAGNOSIS AND TREAT THIS.

HEARTWORM:
YOUR DOG SHOULD HAVE A BLOOD TEST TO DETERMINE THE PRESENCE OF HEARTWORM,
AND THEN A PREVENTATIVE WILL BE GIVEN. THIS IS USUALLY BEST DONE IN MARCH
AND APRIL, AND IS A YEARLY MUST!!!

I HOPE THIS HELPS. PLEASE SEEK THE ADVICE OF YOUR VET, AS HE/SHE IS THE
PERSON BEST ABLE TO POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. IT IS MY HOPE THAT WE
CAN WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM TO BEST CARE FOR THE PETS WE LOVE.

SUE, HOT DIGGITY DOGS!

DENTAL CARE UPDATE

ALL PETS NEED A YEARLY HEALTH CHECKUP FROM THEIR VET. THIS SHOULD INCLUDE A
DENTAL CHECKUP, AND IF YOUR PET IS ONE YEAR OR OLDER
IT PROBABLY NEEDS A PROFESSIONAL TOOTH CLEANING (DONE ONLY BY THE VET) TO
REMOVE ALL PLAQUE AND TARTAR BUILDUP.
GOOD ORAL HYGIENE IS NOT SOMETHING THAT YOUR PET CAN MANAGE BY ITSELF. AS A
RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER, YOU NEED TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN HELPING TO AVOID
PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND TOOTH DECAY.
PERIODONTAL DISEASE IS AN INFLAMMATION OF THE GUM TISSUE SURROUNDING
THE TEETH. THIS IS MOST OFTEN CAUSED BY PLAQUE BUILDUP IN THE SPACE WHERE
THE TOOTH MEETS THE GUM. THIS CAUSES TARTAR TO FORM, WHICH IN TURN CAN
CAUSE TOOTH LOSS, AND COMPLICATIONS TO THE LIVER, HEART, AND KIDNEYS.
SYMPTOMS TO WATCH FOR INCLUDE: PUSS AND TARTAR BUILDUP (CREAMY BROWN,
HARD MATERIAL ON THE TOOTH SURFACE)...DARKENED,DISCOLORED
TEETH...RED,SWOLLEN AND INFLAMMED GUM TISSUE...SEPERATION OF THE GUM TISSUE
FROM THE TOOTH...SORENESS OF GUMS...LOOSE TEETH...LOSS OF APPETITE...TEETH
FALL OUT...HORRIBLE BREATH...EXCESSIVE DROOLING
IF YOU NOTICE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS,CONTACT YOUR VET FOR A DENTAL
EXAM.
REGULAR BRUSHING WILL PREVENT AND/OR ELIMINATE PERIODONTAL DISEASE.
IDEALLY, YOU SHOULD BRUSH YOUR PETS TEETH DAILY, USING A BRUSH AND
TOOTHPASTE MADE ESPECIALLY FOR PETS. NEVER USE A PASTE THAT IS FOR HUMANS,
AS IT CAUSES UPSET STOMACH, AND CANNOT BE RINSED. ON THE DAYS THAT YOU
CAN'T BRUSH, GIVE YOUR DOG CHEWABLE PRODUCTS THAT PROVIDE THE CHEWING
ACTION, SUCH AS A HARD NYLON BONE, RAWHIDE CHIPS, OR WOOL CHEW TOYS.
BRUSH THE TEETH VIGOROUSLY ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK IF POSSIBLE, OR I CAN
DO THIS FOR YOU AS A PART OF THE REGULAR GROOMING PROCESS IF YOU WISH. YOU
SHOULD BRUSH IN A CIRCULAR MOTION TOWARDS THE GUMLINE. BLEEDING MAY OCCUR
AT FIRST, WHICH IS AN INDICATION OF GUM DISEASE, BUT CONTINUED BRUSHING
WILL USUALLY TIGHTEN THE GUMS AND STOP THE BLEEDING WHEN DONE ON A REGULAR
BASIS.
TO FAMILIARIZE YOUR PET WITH BRUSHING, START BY USING YOUR FINGERTIP
WITH A SMALL GAUZE SQUARE MOISTENED WITH TAP WATER, AND GENTLY RUB THE
GUMLINE. DO THIS UNTILL THE PET IS USED TO THIS, AND GRADUALLY MOVE UP TO
USING THE TOOTHBRUSH.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO START A REGULAR DENTAL ROUTINE FOR YOUR PET, NOW IS
THE TIME TO START! I HAVE A LIMITED SUPPLY OF DENTAL STARTER KITS
AVAILABLE, WHICH INCLUDES A TOOTHBRUSH AND PASTE MADE ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR
PET. THE ONE TIME COST OF THE KIT IS $5.00, AND AN ADDITIONAL $5.00
WHENEVER I BRUSH THE TEETH.

HOT DIGGITY DOGS!
HOME AND PET CARE WHILE YOU ARE AWAY

WHETHER YOU GO OUT OF TOWN ON VACATION, BUSINESS, OR A PERSONAL EMERGENCY
FORCES YOU TO LEAVE HOME UNEXPECTEDLY, YOU WILL HAVE ONE LESS THING TO
WORRY ABOUT WHEN YOU KNOW THAT YOUR PET IS IN GOOD HANDS WITH SOMEONE THAT
THEY ARE ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH, AND WHO HAS CARED FOR THEM IN THE PAST. HOT
DIGGITY DOGS! IS NOW EXPANDING ITS CLIENT SERVICES TO INCLUDE IN YOUR HOME
PET SITTING TO BETTER CARE FOR THE PETS WE LOVE. I HAVE BEEN ASKED MANY
TIMES TO RECOMMEND A SITTER WHILE THE FAMILY IS AWAY, AND HAVE DECIDED THAT
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO FOR YOU.
MANY PEOPLE PREFER THE SPECIALIZED ONE-ON-ONE CARE, FEEDING, AND PLAY
THAT JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN IN (EVEN THE BEST OF) KENNELS. YOU CAN BE ASSURED
THAT YOUR PET WON'T SPEND LONELY HOURS LOCKED IN A CAGE WAITING FOR
ATTENTION, FOOD, OR EXERCISE. MANY PETS RETURN HOME FROM A KENNEL
TRAUMATIZED, AND NO LONGER TOTALLY HOUSEBROKEN. AND, WITH PERSONAL IN HOME
CARE, YOUR PET IS NOT EXPOSED TO ANY UNNECESSARY GERMS, DISEASES, OR THE
RISK OF INJURY FROM OTHER PETS.
I WILL BE AT YOUR HOME AS MANY TIMES A DAY AS YOU WOULD LIKE AND AT
THE TIME OF DAY THAT YOU REQUEST. USUALLY 2 TO 3 TIMES PER DAY FOR DOGS,
AND 1 TO 2 TIMES A DAY FOR CATS. I WILL SEE TO IT THAT YOUR PET GETS ANY
MEDICATION NEEDED, AND AT THE CORRECT TIME OF DAY.
ANOTHER GREAT BENEFIT IS HOME CARE AND INDOOR/OUTDOOR SECURITY. I CAN
RE-ARRANGE LIGHTING, CURTAINS, BLINDS,ETC. AND BRING IN THE PAPERS AND THE
MAIL. I ALSO WATER HOUSEPLANTS IF NEEDED, AND THERE IS NO EXTRA FEE FOR
THESE SERVICES!! MY FEES ARE REASONABLE, AND YES, THERE IS A MULTIPLE PET
DISCOUNT THAT ISN'T USUALLY GIVEN AT MOST KENNELS.

RATES:
1 PET 1 VISIT= $10.00 PER VISIT 2 PETS 1 VISIT=$15.00 PER VISIT
